Unlocking History Through Digital Creativity: Grade 8 Students at SMP Edu Global Bandung Bring Islamic Sultanates to Life
Over
three dynamic weeks, Grade 8 classrooms at SMP Edu Global Bandung transformed
into vibrant hubs of historical exploration and creative expression. Embracing
the philosophy of Project-Based Learning (PBL), students stepped away from
traditional textbook memorization to actively research, design, and produce
multimedia projects centered on the rich heritage of Islamic Sultanates in
Indonesia.
The
three-week initiative, which spanned from late September to mid-October 2026,
was thoughtfully structured to integrate social studies, artistic
craftsmanship, and modern digital literacy. The overarching goal was to help
young learners discover how Islamic civilization shaped the political,
cultural, and economic foundations of the Indonesian archipelago.
Working
in collaborative groups, the Eighth Graders were challenged to bring the golden
age of Indonesian sultanates to life through three core deliverables:
- Interactive Historical Podcasts: Students
conducted in-depth historical research, authored original scripts, and
assumed the roles of podcast hosts and historical experts. They recorded
and edited engaging audio-visual episodes discussing pivotal figures,
trade routes, cultural legacies, and major achievements of sultanates such
as Samudera Pasai, Demak, Mataram, and Gowa-Tallo.
- Historical Artifact Replicas: To connect
tangibly with the past, each group created detailed physical replicas of
historical items. Combining artistic skill with historical accuracy,
students crafted tangible models of royal seals (cap mohor),
ancient gold and silver coins, traditional weaponry, and ceremonial royal
crowns.
- Infographic Sultanate Posters:
Complementing their audio and physical creations, teams designed
comprehensive infographic posters. These visual displays featured detailed
territorial maps, royal genealogies, and concise summaries of their
assigned sultanate’s historical impact.

The
project culminated in an energetic Final Day showcase on Friday, October
16, 2026. The atmosphere across the school assembly hall was electric as Grade
8 students, teachers, and school leaders gathered for a special screening
session. The audience watched each group's finished podcast productions on the
big screen, celebrating the impressive editing and storytelling skills
demonstrated by the students.
Surrounding
the screening area was an interactive exhibition gallery showcasing the
hand-crafted artifact replicas alongside the colorful infographic posters.
Visitors were invited to walk through the display, where student
representatives proudly explained the historical context behind each replica
and answered questions about their research process.
The
Principal of SMP Edu Global Bandung, Sandi Rudiansah, S.Pd., M.B.A., Gr.,
expressed immense pride in the students's achievements and dedication. He
emphasized that this PBL approach successfully bridges the gap between
historical awareness and contemporary skill sets. By producing media and
physical artifacts, students did not merely memorize historical dates; they
developed essential 21st-century competencies, including critical thinking,
public speaking, teamwork, and digital media production.
Through
this immersive experience, SMP Edu Global Bandung continues to demonstrate its
commitment to innovative education, proving that learning history can be an
engaging, meaningful, and deeply rewarding journey for middle school students.
